| 17th Jan 2009 | Shabba takes a birthday win |
Yesterday was Shabba's birthday and what better way to celebrate it than with a trophy win. In a dramatic finish with some late submissions coming in right on the bell, things at the top were mixed around. It looked for a long while like Morana CZ had done enough for the win, but then with minutes to spare, Bertik007 CZ sent in a net full of trout to take the lead. Very shortly after this it was Shabba's turn to really cut things fine and submit an extra fish which was just enough to take victory away from Bertik by just over a pound. The winning tactics involved freelining small volt boilies just after lunch time. Second place angler Bertik007 CZ, also fishing around lunchtime and freelined black widow and dendrobaena to attract the trout. Third place went to Dazza who had a combination of tactics used by the top two anglers, again fishing at lunchtime freelining small volt boilies and dendrobaena worms. Current champion Morana CZ came in 4th place and caught the biggest fish of the day, a 13 lb brown trout. The final top 5 place went to Jerry CZ who like most of the rest freelined black widows at lunchtime. A total of 91 anglers attended the weigh-in yesterday, making another very good turnout.

The match of the day was without doubt Bertik007 vs Dazza, both anglers came in the top 5 with Bertik007's late submission just taking the win. As predicted the Poacher vs Kusti match was also very close and finished with Poacher being just 3 places ahead overall on the day. There was a couple which could be considered possible shock results, firstly Michael Taylor was definitely punching above his weight in knocking out the in form Tigeress111. Also Jendyss CZ had an excellent win over premier league angler Stevie. Good luck to all 16 remaining anglers in the next round.
On the league front, the top premier league angler yesterday was currently leader Shabba who added another win to extend the lead at the top. At the bottom Jerry CZ had a good top 5 finish to move closer to safety in the division, whilst Pawel has slipped into the relegation zone.
The first division anglers didn't enjoy yesterdays match so much with only Kenny Ken jnr making the top 10 overall, this has meant that Kenny Ken jnr has now closed the gap to Carpy2009 at the top to just 34 points, the top of this division is still extremely tight and open though. At the bottom Michael Taylor had a good day to move to over 400 points and a step closer to safety in the division, Jim B has dropped into the danger zone as a result of Wojtas pl moving upwards.
Ladadar CZ had a very good day finishing just outside the top 5 in sixth place which was enough to take the division two angler of the day title. Phoenix Thorn is now looking hot favourite for this title and accolade and is well over the 900 point mark at the top, there is a good battle going on for the other three promotion places.
In division three, Topman still leads the way over Tomthetroutmaster. Rychu and Mark Silver have both now moved up into the automatic promotion places in third and fourth, whilst Fragly in 5th place has been steadilly slipping down the league after a good early start to the month. Tomthetroutmaster took the third division angler of the day credit with a 14th place overall yesterday.
Three records were broken for Franklin Lakes by trophy anglers yesterday. Bob Poultney took the smallmouth bass record away from arapaima pl, increasing it by just 5 drams to 3 lb 6 oz 13 drams. The brown trout record was broken a few times during the day, but by the weigh-in the biggest sent in was caught by Morana CZ, a nice 13 lb fish, the record at the start of the match was held by Willy Waggler and stood at 6 lb 5 ozs. Similarly to the brown trout, the venue record for the brook trout was also broken on more than one occasion during the day, however it was Steve68's name that is now associated with the record with a nice 4 lb 7 oz specimen, this is just slightly over a pound more than the record before the match which was held again by Willy Waggler.
Todays match was meant to be held in Vietnam but due to an air traffic control strike in central Asia, the venue has had to be altered at the last minute. The sense of relief throughout the ranks of trophy anglers could be felt for miles around. Instead everyone piled onto a Virgin train and headed north for a match on the Leeds and Liverpool canal ( click for records and download link ). The species of the day are tench and bream, of which the latter is expected to figure the most. Good luck to all fishing today.
Finally, everyone knows that first step to catching fish is finding them, to help pass some time whilst waiting for a bite and to test your skills at locating fish, below is a pond shaped puzzle containing fish species, but how many fish are in there ? - each name is either horizontal, vertical or diagnoal in a straight line - answers tomorrow.
